Two Trenchless Methods

Pipe Bursting vs. CIPP Lining — What's the Difference?

Trenchless sewer repair covers two distinct methods. The right one depends on the condition of your existing pipe — we assess after camera inspection and recommend honestly.

💥 Pipe Bursting

Full pipe replacement — no trench
A cone-shaped bursting head is pulled through the existing pipe, fracturing and displacing it outward while simultaneously pulling a new HDPE pipe into place behind it. The old pipe is destroyed and replaced in one pass — with only entry and exit access pits at each end.
Completely replaces the old pipe
Works even on severely degraded pipes
New HDPE pipe — 50+ year lifespan
Slightly larger diameter than original
Requires access pits at each end
Not suitable for pipes with offset joints
Best for: Pipes that need full replacement — severely deteriorated clay, collapsed Orangeburg, or galvanized sewer lines at end of life. When the old pipe is too far gone for lining.

🛡️ CIPP Pipe Lining

New pipe inside the old pipe — no trench
A flexible felt liner saturated with resin is inserted into the existing pipe and inflated against the pipe walls. The resin cures in place — creating a seamless, jointless new pipe inside the old one. Access is through a single cleanout point with no additional pits needed.
Minimal disruption — single access point
Seals cracks, root entry points & joints
Smooth interior resists future buildup
50-year lifespan on cured liner
Slight reduction in pipe diameter
Not suitable for collapsed or offset pipes
Best for: Pipes with cracks, root entry points, or joint gaps that are structurally sound overall. Ideal for established yards, gardens, and driveways where any excavation would cause significant damage.

We always camera-inspect before recommending a method. If neither trenchless option is appropriate for your pipe's condition, we'll tell you — and explain why traditional excavation may be necessary in that specific case.

Trenchless or Traditional?

Why Trenchless Matters for Santa Cruz Homes

In Santa Cruz, the case for trenchless repair is particularly strong — for reasons specific to this city's housing stock, lot sizes, and property values.

Established landscaping. Santa Cruz's older neighborhoods have mature trees, established gardens, and landscaping that took decades to grow. Traditional excavation of a sewer line through a planted yard can cause significant damage to root systems, irrigation, and hardscape that costs as much to restore as the sewer repair itself. Trenchless avoids nearly all of that.

Driveways and patios. Many Santa Cruz properties have concrete driveways or pavers directly above the sewer line run. Traditional excavation requires cutting and replacing concrete — adding $2,000–$5,000 to the repair cost and leaving a visible patch. Trenchless eliminates that cost entirely.

Property values. At Santa Cruz median home values well over $1.5 million, preserving the aesthetic and structural integrity of your property matters. A trenchless repair leaves the yard looking essentially untouched — versus a traditional repair that leaves a visible soil disturb strip across the property for months.

Trenchless vs. traditional excavation
FactorTrenchlessTraditional
Yard disruption Minimal — 1–2 pits Full trench dug

Driveway/concrete No cutting required Cut & replace
Job duration Usually 1 day 1–3 days typically
Total cost Often lower overall Higher with restoration

Trenchless isn't always the right answer — we never force a method that isn't appropriate for the pipe. But when it's feasible, it's almost always the better choice for Santa Cruz homeowners who care about their property.

How We Work

Our Trenchless Repair Process

Camera first, quote second, work third. Every time.

1

Sewer camera inspection

We run a camera through the full length of the sewer line — documenting what we find and determining the condition of the pipe. This tells us which trenchless method is appropriate, or whether traditional excavation is required.
2

Method recommendation & upfront quote

Based on what the camera shows, we recommend pipe bursting, CIPP lining, or traditional repair — and explain why. We quote the full job before starting. You approve before any work begins.
3

Access point preparation

For pipe bursting, we excavate small entry and exit pits — typically 3–4 feet square — at each end of the damaged run. For CIPP lining, access is through the existing cleanout with no additional excavation needed.
4

Trenchless repair completed

The new pipe is installed — either by pulling through and bursting the old pipe, or by inserting and curing the CIPP liner in place. The process is systematic and completed in a single day for most Santa Cruz properties.
5

Post-repair camera verification

We run the camera again after the repair to confirm the new pipe is properly installed, the line is clear, and the repair is complete. Access pits are backfilled and restored. The job isn't done until the camera confirms it.
Why Santa Cruz is ideal for trenchless repair
🌳

Mature trees everywhere

Santa Cruz's urban canopy is one of its most valued features — and one of the most common reasons sewer lines fail here. Trenchless repair avoids disturbing the root systems of mature trees that are often in direct proximity to the sewer line run.
🏠

Small urban lots

Many Santa Cruz properties — especially in older neighborhoods like Seabright, the West Side, and Live Oak — have relatively small lots where every square foot of yard matters. Trenchless repair preserves all of it versus traditional excavation that leaves a visible scar across the property for months.
🏡

Vacation rentals need fast turnaround

Capitola and Santa Cruz's vacation rental market means sewer repairs need to be completed between bookings. A trenchless repair completed in one day with no visible yard disruption is dramatically less disruptive than a traditional job that leaves the yard inaccessible for days and visibly disturbed for weeks.
🔩

Most Santa Cruz clay lines are candidates

The aging clay sewer lines in Santa Cruz's pre-1970 housing stock — cracks, root entry points, and joint gaps — are exactly what CIPP lining was designed for. If the pipe is structurally sound overall and hasn't collapsed, lining is typically the most cost-effective and least disruptive solution.
Common Questions

Trenchless Sewer Repair FAQs

Questions we hear most from Santa Cruz homeowners considering trenchless repair.

How much does trenchless sewer repair cost in Santa Cruz? ▾

CIPP pipe lining typically runs $3,000–$8,000 for most Santa Cruz residential sewer lines, depending on the length of pipe being lined and site conditions. Pipe bursting is generally similar in range. Traditional excavation can run $5,000–$15,000 once you factor in concrete cutting, spoil removal, and surface restoration — making trenchless often the more economical option even before accounting for landscaping preservation. We quote upfront after camera inspection. Wisetack financing is available — monthly payment options for qualifying projects.

How long does trenchless sewer repair take? ▾

Most trenchless sewer repairs in Santa Cruz are completed in one day. CIPP lining is typically faster — the liner is inserted and cured within a few hours, and the line is back in service the same day. Pipe bursting may take slightly longer depending on the line length and access conditions, but remains a single-day job for most residential properties.

Can any sewer pipe be repaired trenchlessly? ▾

Not every pipe is a candidate. CIPP lining requires the host pipe to be structurally sound enough to hold its shape during the liner installation — severely collapsed or deformed pipe cannot be lined. Pipe bursting requires that the soil around the pipe can accommodate the displaced fragments — it's not suitable for pipes running through concrete slabs or in very tight conditions. Camera inspection before committing to a method is essential. We'll tell you honestly if traditional excavation is the right answer.

How long does CIPP lining last? ▾

CIPP-lined pipes are rated for 50+ years when properly installed. The cured resin creates a seamless, jointless new pipe surface inside the old pipe — with no joints where roots can re-enter. The smooth interior also resists grease and scale buildup better than the original clay. In practice, a well-installed CIPP liner should outlast the original pipe by decades.

Will trenchless repair eliminate my root problem permanently? ▾

CIPP lining seals all the entry points roots were using — the cracks and joint gaps — creating a smooth, jointless surface that roots cannot penetrate. This is a long-term solution for root intrusion, not a temporary fix. Pipe bursting replaces the pipe entirely with new HDPE, which roots cannot enter. Both methods effectively eliminate the existing root problem. Future root intrusion would require a new entry point to develop, which takes many years on a properly installed liner or new pipe.
