Why RO

Why Santa Cruz Homeowners Choose Reverse Osmosis

The Eco-Flow Plumbing team in front of our Santa Cruz shop
The Eco-Flow Plumbing team — serving Santa Cruz County since 2008

Santa Cruz tap water is safe to drink — but it carries enough dissolved minerals, chloramine, and other compounds that many residents prefer filtered drinking water. A properly installed under-sink RO system delivers consistently clean, great-tasting water at the tap without the ongoing cost and plastic waste of bottled water.

Most Popular Drinking Water Upgrade

Up to 99% Contaminant Reduction — Direct from Your Tap

Reverse osmosis forces water through a semipermeable membrane that removes dissolved solids, heavy metals, chloramine, nitrates, and other contaminants that standard filters miss. The result is noticeably cleaner, better-tasting water — and better ice, better coffee, better everything that uses your tap water.

Santa Cruz Water Context

Santa Cruz County water is treated with chloramine (chlorine + ammonia) rather than straight chlorine — a combination that's harder to remove with simple carbon filters and that some people find affects taste and smell more noticeably. RO removes chloramine completely alongside the mineral load from local water hardness. RO treats drinking water at one tap; if you're weighing whole-home hardness, see whether Santa Cruz homes really need a water softener.
💰

Ends the Bottled Water Habit

A family spending $50–$100/month on bottled or delivery water recoups the cost of an RO system within 12–18 months. After that, ongoing costs are just filter replacements — typically $50–$100/year. No plastic, no deliveries, no running out.
☕

Better Coffee, Ice & Cooking

The flavor difference is most noticeable in coffee, tea, and anything cooked or mixed with tap water. Ice cubes made with RO water are clearer and taste cleaner. Many Santa Cruz homeowners with espresso machines or high-end coffee equipment install RO specifically for this reason.
What Gets Removed

What Reverse Osmosis Filters Out

RO removes a broader range of contaminants than any other point-of-use filter type. Here's what a standard 4–5 stage system addresses.

🧂

Dissolved Salts & Minerals

TDS, calcium, magnesium
🧪

Chloramine & Chlorine

Santa Cruz uses chloramine
⚗️

Heavy Metals

Lead, arsenic, chromium
🌾

Nitrates & Nitrites

From agricultural runoff
💊

Pharmaceuticals

Trace compounds in municipal water
🦠

Bacteria & Protozoa

With UV stage on some systems
🏭

VOCs & PFAs

With activated carbon pre-filter
🟤

Sediment & Turbidity

Pre-filter stage removes particles

Removal rates vary by system and contaminant. A quality 4–5 stage system typically removes 95–99% of total dissolved solids. We can advise on which system is appropriate for your water quality concerns when you call.

The Installation

What the Installation Involves

Most under-sink RO installations are completed in 2–3 hours. Here's what's involved and what we handle.

Under-sink placement. The RO system itself — tank, membrane housing, and filter stages — mounts inside the cabinet under the sink. We configure the layout to fit your cabinet and leave adequate space for filter access during future replacements.

Supply line connection. We tap into the cold water supply line under the sink using a saddle valve or angle stop, routing a 1/4-inch supply line to the RO system's pre-filter stage.

Dedicated faucet. RO systems deliver water through a separate dedicated faucet mounted to the sink deck or countertop — not your existing faucet. If your sink has an unused pre-drilled hole, we use it. If not, we drill a new hole in the appropriate location.

Drain connection. The system connects to the drain pipe under the sink for the reject water output. We connect at the drain tailpiece or P-trap depending on your configuration.

Ice maker line. If your refrigerator has an ice maker or water dispenser, we can run a dedicated RO supply line to it — so your ice and refrigerator water are also filtered.

Flush and test. We flush the system per manufacturer spec, run through multiple fill cycles, and confirm the system is producing water and holding pressure before we leave.

1

Assessment

We confirm under-sink space, supply valve access, drain configuration, and whether your sink has a pre-drilled faucet hole.
2

Mount the System

Filter housing, membrane, and storage tank secured under the sink in a clean, accessible configuration.
3

Connect Supply & Drain

Cold water supply tapped, drain line connected to the drain assembly. All connections checked for leaks.
4

Install Faucet

Dedicated RO faucet mounted to sink deck or countertop. Tubing connected to system output.
5

Ice Maker Line (if applicable)

RO output line run to refrigerator ice maker/water dispenser — so filtered water goes everywhere.
6

Flush & Test

System flushed per spec. Tank fills and holds pressure. Water confirmed flowing from faucet. Filter schedule reviewed with you.

Common Questions

Reverse Osmosis Installation FAQs

Questions we hear most from Santa Cruz homeowners considering RO installation.

Do I need to supply my own RO system, or can you provide one? ▾

Both options work. Many homeowners purchase a system themselves (iSpring, APEC, Waterdrop, and Aquasana are popular brands available online) and hire us for the installation. We can also advise on well-regarded systems if you want a recommendation before purchasing. Call us and we can discuss what makes sense for your setup.

How long does installation take? ▾

Most under-sink RO installations take 2–3 hours. A straightforward install in a cabinet with accessible plumbing and a pre-drilled sink hole can be done in under 2 hours. If we need to drill a new faucet hole or run a line to the refrigerator, add 30–60 minutes. We confirm the scope when we arrive and give you a realistic time estimate before starting.

My sink doesn't have an extra hole for an RO faucet. Is that a problem? ▾

Not usually. We can drill a new hole in most stainless steel, porcelain, or stone sinks. Granite and composite stone require a diamond-tipped bit and slightly more care, but it's standard work. Farmhouse sinks without a deck also allow countertop mounting in many cases. We assess the sink during the install and discuss options before drilling anything.

Will RO water be safe for my fish tank or plants? ▾

RO water has very low mineral content — nearly pure H2O. This is excellent for fish tanks where you want to control mineral parameters precisely, but plants may need remineralized water since some dissolved minerals support plant health. For drinking and cooking purposes, the low mineral content is a benefit rather than a concern.

How often do the filters need to be replaced? ▾

A typical 4–5 stage system has three service intervals: pre-filters (sediment and carbon) every 6–12 months, the RO membrane every 2–3 years, and the post-carbon polishing filter every 12 months. Actual intervals depend on your water quality and usage volume. We walk you through the schedule and label the filters at installation so you know what to replace and when.

How much does RO installation cost in Santa Cruz? ▾

Installation labor for a standard under-sink RO system (assuming you've already purchased the unit) typically runs $150–$300 depending on the complexity — whether a faucet hole needs to be drilled, whether we're connecting a refrigerator ice maker line, and how accessible the under-sink plumbing is. If you need a new angle stop valve or other hardware, we'll add that to the quote. We provide a firm price before starting.
